Meet The Face Behind Maximum Lock & Safe

I’m Darren Gough, the proud owner of Maximum Lock & Safe.

I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.

I was in high school working at my family’s Subway sandwich shop in Markham when I came across locksmithing as a career option. My father was getting the locks at the shop changed on advice from a good friend, and the locksmith who changed our locks asked my dad what I’d planned to do as a career after high school.

During this chat with the locksmith, my father shared that I would likely be interested in a trade because I was quite handy at home and in the shop and was always intrigued by how things worked. At this, the locksmith mentioned that he taught a course in locksmithing and that I should check it out. Excited to learn something new, I decided to give the course a shot, and believe it or not, everything just came to me naturally. I completed the courses while still in high school and worked as an apprentice for a few years until deciding in 1994 to go out on my own as Maximum Lock & Safe.

As of August 2019, it will be twenty-five years that we’ve been in business and twenty-nine years that I’ve been a locksmith.

To promote my services, back in the day, I primarily advertised through the yellow pages, which was simple and easy to do for a few leads. Nowadays, companies like mine need to think smarter with social media and get a web presence to be successful.

Besides building my client base through modern means, I also work on retaining my fantastic corporate clientele that has been loyal for many years. I manage this by learning about networking platforms and keeping up with new products to better serve our clients.

The team and I enjoy solving problems for our clients and ensuring long-lasting installations from locking master key systems to severe high traffic entryways that need to have doors and locks to take the abuse they endure daily.

I take great pride in my efforts when I see a door or lock system that I installed for my clients years ago, and it is still working flawlessly. Similarly, I’m pleased that none of our clients have had to call us back to fix the same problem again.

To keep our clients absolutely happy, we do our best to answer all of their questions and provide efficient services that are second to none. Moreover, a properly run office ensures that all our work is well-organized and completed on time. I believe that our prompt service, constant communication with clients, and the ability to recognize their needs have been fundamental to our success through the years.

While I have experienced much success over time, I have definitely endured many ups and downs as any business owner would. However, I must say the first large master key system I put in place with Abloy Locks, propelled me to keep doing what I do. With that project, I was able to meet all of my clients’ needs and complete the project flawlessly in less time than I anticipated. The job was a major confidence booster and is a reminder of the progress I’ve made with my business.

When I’m not at work, I enjoy playing hockey. I’m a hockey nut. I play weekly all year round with a bunch of great guys for the Brooklin Barley’s Hockey Club. I also build a rink every year in my yard for the enjoyment of all the kids in our neighborhood.

Apart from hockey, I’m a strong supporter of Bell Let’s Talk, which is a wide-reaching, multi-year program designed to create awareness about mental illness and supports mental health across the country.
